Youth Prevention Universal
Universal prevention utilizes LifeSkills Training ™ (LST), which is a uniquely designed substance abuse program with a foundation on science. Rather than simply teaching information about drugs, LifeSkills combats the primary underlying causes of substance abuse use identified in over 20 years of research. LST uses lectures discussions, coaching, and practice - and is taught to 3rd through 8th graders. Three main components to address substance use: drug resistance, personal self-management, and general social skills. The Second Step Violence Prevention program uses curriculum that addresses the issue of interpersonal violence among adolescents. It is designed to reduce their impulsive and aggressive behavior and increase their level of social competence through empathy training, interpersonal problem solving, behavioral skills training and anger management. Youth Prevention Selective
Selective prevention strategies utilize the Strengthening Families curriculum for ages 10 – 14. This program is for children at risk, such as those whose parents are in treatment or who have other risk factors. We plan to have a Strengthening Families program available specifically for Mexican Americans and this would encompass children ages 6 – 14. This is a 6 – 7 week course that will be offered at select sites in all of our counties. The Kid Connection is a curriculum for children ages 10 – 14. PREVENTION.......THE ULTIMATE SOLUTION
